Had ‘Perks Of Being A Wallflower’ been written by sleazy celeb gossiper Perez Hilton, it would have turned out something like this. Ironically the female lead of that film headlines ‘The Bling Ring’ which is based on a true story about a group of teenage miscreants who repeatedly ransacked the homes of notable celebrities including Paris Hilton (who makes a cameo), Orlando Bloom and Audrina Patridge.
With her frenetic turn in ‘This Is The End’ and of course her cabaret antics in the ‘Perks Of Being A Wallflower’, it seems that Harry Potter alumni Emma Watson is picking roles to shed her picturesque, uptight Hermione Granger kudos that we know her so well for. But surprisingly- given her star credentials- she is not focal point of this cautionary tale for celebrity obsessed teens. Instead the lesser known Katie Chang and Israel Broussard as the ringleaders, take greater precedence. Nevertheless she is up to her usual bubbly effervescence as the Adderall popping, thieving, fashion obsessed bitch, Nicolette.
Unfortunately the directing and scripting is not as accomplished. There is an annoying urgency to up the bombast in terms of the booming music score, pump up slow motions shots of the group partying and extend the scenes of their thievery. But this overwhelming onslaught of blaring overkill in style actually imprisons the characters in a flurry of drug induced decadence.
The director Franics Coopala skirts around their emotional state and their rationale for such deeds, leaving them all lacking in humanity. Protagonists are resolutely one-dimensional, avoiding any reasoning in terms of ethics, or exploring their provenance with regards to their insatiable appetite for designer goods. Ultimately the sole point that movie succeeds in conveying across, is the irony that even the debauched and aimless can find fame.
Watson shines but it is clear that everyone else prefers style over substance leaving this as shallow as the very celebrity culture it attempts to satirize.
